Play Yahtzee Online For Real Money
Yahtzee is a time honoured game that’s been played in living rooms across the world since the 1950s and just like other popular card and board games, it’s now made its way onto the cyber waves of the Internet. Traditionally played using a set of five dice, online Yahtzee allows the player to roll the animated dice with the click of a button, using computerised random number generators to determine the outcome of the roll, with the computer automatically keeping track of your score.
This article will give you the rundown of how to play online Yahtzee and where you can play real money Yahtzee on the Internet.
Where can I play Yahtzee online?
You can find virtual Yahtzee at hundreds of sites across the Internet, from online card game hubs to social media sites like Facebook. A simple Google search will bring up tonnes of Yahtzee sites, while heading to the app store using your iOS or Android device will also give you many options for downloadable Yahtzee apps.
As far as playing online Yahtzee for real money, unfortunately this is not yet an option at any of our recommended casinos. Given Yahtzee’s history as a family friendly game usually played purely for recreational purposes it is not considered a traditional gambling game, but as more recreational games are starting to emerge as real money casino games we expect that leading casinos will soon start to add Yahtzee to the repertoire.
In the meantime, you can hone your skills playing Yahtzee for free online. Alternatively, if you have access to five standard dices, you can start practicing in real life.
How to play Yahtzee
Yahtzee is a dice game that was first created by board game leaders Milton Bradley in America in the 1940’s. It’s a game of luck which is a blend between other popular dice games Yacht, Generala and Poker Dice and it’s often noted to benefit from similar skills and strategies employed in blackjack and poker. It can be played as a solo game but is best played with two or more players.
The aim of the game is to roll five dice at once in order to produce the highest score possible. Yahtzee consist of 13 rounds, with a different category for each round consisting of its own set of rules for scoring.
For each round, the player can roll the dice up to three times in an attempt to get the highest scoring combination for any of the 13 categories. The game ends when all 13 categories have been completed and the player with the highest overall score is declared the winner.
Playing Yahtzee online makes it easier to keep score, without the need to manually complete scorecards on pieces of paper. You can choose to play against the computer or against other players from around the world, including your own friends and family when using Yahtzee apps.
Yahtzee scoring explained
On a Yahtzee score card, there are two sections (the lower and upper section) which each consist of different combinations that need to be rolled in return for a certain amount of points. The two sections and their required combinations is explained below:
The Upper Section
For each of these categories, the score is made up of the sum of how many of that number appeared multiplied by its relevant category. For example, if you choose fours and roll a 2, 4, 4, 4 and 3 the score will be 4 X 4 = 16 points.
- Aces – roll as many ones as possible
- Twos – roll as many twos as possible
- Threes – roll as many threes as possible
- Fours – roll as many fours as possible
- Fives – roll as many fives as possible
- Sixes – roll as many sixes as possible
The Lower Section
Points are scored differently for each category in the lower section as detailed below.
- Three of a kind – roll three dice of the same number = score is the sum of all dice
- Four of a kind – roll four dice of the same number = score is the sum of all dice
- Full house – roll three of a kind along with a pair = 25 points
- Small straight – roll four sequential numbers (eg. 1, 2, 3, 4) = 30 points
- Large straight – roll five sequential numbers = 40 points
- Chance – this can be anything you choose, best used when landing no other winning combinations = score is the sum of all dice
- Yahtzee – roll five of a kind = 50 points
,
Some games also employ a special Yahtzee bonus rule where further points are accumulated if a player manages to roll multiple Yahtzee’s (five of a kind). Refer to the rules of the specific game you are playing to determine what rules are in place for the Yahtzee bonus.
Why play yahtzee and farkle at freethedice.com?
freethedice.com is a very popular online yahtzee game community, founded in September 2006 by three administrators, Kal, inqov and Mary. I am very happy to be able to say that our small community has become a daily hangout for many people who enjoy yahtzee. The games here are free and always will be, although we do have a dice shop containing different coloured dice and animated dice to brighten up your gaming experience.
Our major goal was to create a games site that focuses on playing games and having fun and to create an atmosphere where people chat whilst playing.
Our games website is entirely browser-based so there is no download required. The site has various forms of multiplayer or solo yahtzee games: painted/rainbow, triple, regular yahtzee and many other rule sets that were devised by the players, which leads me to the next point. This is more than just a games website, this is a real community where people spend a lot of time chatting and having fun during their games. Some play just for fun, to chat, others are more competitive and enter some of our daily automated tournaments.
Freethedice.com was actually founded back in 2006 as a challenge: 'can you make a place where we can play a game where there are no cheaters, no power gamers or abusive people?' Since then, more than 80,000 players have registered over the years and enjoyed playing yahtzee with their friends, families and new acquaintances.
Farkle was added in September of 2021! Loads of people love playing farkle and it has become quickly popular.
Why not take a peek inside our site and register now for free, to get started and start playing yahtzee and farkle today with some great people?

Is Yahtzee a game of blind chance?
Some people suggest that there is no skill in the game of Yahtzee. It is true that the game has a huge element of luck, it is not only luck, there is also a lot of decision-making that goes on. I like to think of it as a game of luck management. It is really up to the player to make the right choices at the right times to maximise his or her chance of either scoring as many points as possible or of winning the game. And even then, there is a difference between strategies. The types of decisions made to give yourself the chance of the highest possible score for a single game are very different to the kinds of decisions you will make to try to get the best average score. I remember playing a tournament game where I was losing by over one hundred points with two turns left, but I had yahtzee and high straight open. With a low straight already on the table, I ignored it and went for a yahtzee as it was my only hope to win the game. A ridiculous decision, but I did manage to score two yahtzees, 140 points and won the game! So, for me, yahtzee is a game of luck management and decision-making. Of course, there are times when the dice decide you will lose the game and those times can be very frustrating and that's when it is good to enjoy chatting with your opponents!

Dice brings people together
Over the years so many people have formed strong friendships through our website. There have been cases of people here at freethedice.com enjoying each other's conversation and sense of humour so much that eventually they have met, sometimes individually and sometimes in groups. I am very happy that a simple games site can bring people together sometimes. In at least one case, it led to marriage!
Many other times, people tend to play yahtzee with their family or friends from a distance, just as a nice, fun activity to do together whilst chatting online.

It is probably no coincidence, that the founder of the game, formerly called The Yacht Game, originally invented the rules so that he and his family would have something to do whilst at sea, on their yacht. It is also no coincidence that some 40-50 years later, his game is still very popular as a social activity and brings people together, either for the first time, or to keep people together.
